What is Power?

Throughout spiritual and metaphysical literature we see references to “power” and “empowerment”. Often we read or hear that there is an “imbalance of power”. Individuals who experience inequality or wrongdoing have somehow “given their power away”. If we are to transform ourselves individually and collectively we must “take our power back”. Then do we become empowered? What does all of this mean? If we really had power, why would we give it away? How can we take something back that doesn’t seem tangible in the first place? What defines our power?

Power is a strong and dynamic word. It stirs unique and subtle feelings within our hearts and minds. Each individual perceives power in their own unique way. There are as many expressions of power as there are people. Because the word “power” is often misunderstood, let’s explore its meaning and expression.

Many people perceive power as control or authority over others. This perception is merely an illusion, for none of us can truly control or have power over another. True power is not a prize to win or lose; it is not a bargaining or manipulation tool.

We are divine spiritual beings living in a human form. Each individual draws their power from the same Divine Source. This Source infinitely receives, contains, and expresses power through us and through anyone who chooses to draw from it. Power is a divine current of energy that flows through every thought, emotion, word, action, and deed we choose to express. Although everyone draws their power from the same Divine Energy Source, many are often challenged in expressing power in a balanced and harmonious way.

True power, or empowerment, is every human’s natural state of being. As we awaken and realign to our innate power and energy – our natural state of being – our collective understanding and expression of empowerment emerges. We then achieve true empowerment while simultaneously expressing our power in a balanced way.

We can perceive the innate power within each individual as a state of energy balance. Our innate power ebbs and flows within a continuous state of energy balance or imbalance. Maintaining a state of energy balance in all ways ultimately leads to true empowerment.

Our overall state of energy balance reflects how we manage our energies on a daily basis; how we choose to engage and express every thought, emotion, word, action, and deed. In a state of energy balance we neither give too much of our energy away nor take too much from others. We create a state of energy balance and true empowerment as we engage our Divine Source and discover a harmonious expression for all energies that come into our life.

When one person seemingly gives their power away to another, or perceives they have power over another, they actually disrupt their own energy balance and create an imbalance. Many individuals give their power away – they relinquish their state of energy balance – without being fully aware it. As an example, individuals often willingly (but unconsciously) give their power away when they identify themselves as the victim of an event or situation. As a victim, they give up their sense of empowerment to avoid taking responsibility for their independence or personal energy balance. They create their own imbalance of power.

We see this scenario occurring often as citizens give their power to governments, patients give power to doctors, and followers give their power to religions. Many people fall easily into a disempowered role as they avoid taking personal responsibility for their energy balance. Some people find it easier to blame others for their current condition than to take responsibility for how they manage their energy. Choosing empowerment requires a significant level of personal responsibility and awareness that some are not ready to accept.

As a person avoids personal responsibility they gradually become more unconscious of how they manage their energies. They become unconscious and unaware of their overall state of energy balance. This process occurs after years of experiencing patterns of unworthiness, self-doubt, and victim hood. When our state of energy balance becomes completely unconscious we enter a state of “spiritual automatic pilot”. Many people live their lives in a kind of spiritual slumber, a state of unconscious disempowerment. Spiritual automatic pilot is neither right nor wrong, it simply indicates an opportunity for growth; an opportunity to awaken to higher levels of personal responsibility, choice, and empowerment.

Turning off the automatic pilot switch requires looking at our state of energy imbalance with great compassion and knowing we can correct it with each choice we make. As we make empowering choices in our lives, we begin to reconnect with our natural state of power and energy balance. Every thought, emotion, word, action, and deed we choose that reflects a greater responsibility for our energy ultimately returns us to our natural state of empowerment. An effortless alignment occurs as we embrace our divine state and experience greater responsibility and power. In this state we consciously channel our divine current of power to the world around us in a balanced and harmonious way.

What does an empowered person look like?

An empowered person consciously acknowledges their internal state of energy balance at all times. They recognize how each choice they make arises from this state of being. If their state of energy balance begins to waver at any moment, they sense their energy leaving and immediately reclaim their balance and power by making the appropriate choices.

An empowered person looks to find energy balance in every situation and observes how their energy balance affects their environment. They embrace the responsibility of managing their energy consciously and they do this with great honor. An empowered person practices discernment regarding all the energies that come into their lives and they choose only what feeds and nurtures their unique state of energy balance. Within them lives a profound sense of trust, faith, love, and acceptance of their divine self, and that empowered state radiates throughout everything they say and do.

Empowered individuals radiate a unique sense of confidence without arrogance. They are humble and walk softly yet are assertive and clear when expressing their thoughts and feelings. They often speak their truth in a way that allows others to stand in their own truth without feeling threatened. They acknowledge their sovereignty as a radiant divine being while simultaneously embracing the interconnectedness of all life. They express an authentic state of empowerment while simultaneously remaining humble to their divine source. Empowered individuals experience a direct connection with their divine source of power, and this power shines throughout their entire being.
